25.2 COMPOSITION OF FOOD

Food can be divided into two categories based on the amount of water in the feed.

1. Water All foods have some water in them.

2. Dry Matter In the laboratory, after the water is removed from the food, only “dry matter” is left. The dry matter contains the other four nutrients: protein, energy, minerals and vitamins, as well as substances the body cannot use (waste). The waste passes out of the body as manure.
